With three returning All-Gopher Conference players returning and only one play gone from last year’s team, the WEM volleyball team should be a contender for the Conference, Sub-Section, and Section titles in 2023.

WEM finished third in the conference with a 9-2 record and was 18-14 overall, winning the Sub-Section Championship and losing in the Section 2A title game.

Seniors Claire Bohlen (1st Team All Gopher), Alayna Atherton (2nd Team), and Josie Volkmann (3rd Team) will be the team leaders for a squad which graduated only Jordan Green (Honorable Mention All-Gopher).

This year is the 31st year of Ahlman's Shooter's Round Up, one of the nation's top events for outdoor and gun enthusiasts.

This year's two-day event is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 26 and Sunday, Aug. 27 on the Ahlman's Gun Shop site north of Morristown.

The Round-Up is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days. There is an admission fee for this event, which is billed as the Greatest Shooting Show on Earth.

Jeff and Sue Stangler of rural Waterville have a safe full of interesting paperwork which go back more than 150 years.

The papers include the original deeds of their current farm, which was recently recognized as a Century Farm and a Sesquicentennial Farm by Farm Bureau and the Minnesota State Fair.

With nothing in the city policy book governing cannabis, the Elysian City Council took action to make sure they have plenty of time to make sure there is ordinances in place when it comes to the sale and other items dealing with the drug.

The council approved an interim ordinance prohibiting the sale, testing, manufacturing, cultivating, growing, transporting, delivery, and distribution of cannabis products in the City of Elysian.

Ruth Lavonne (Wagner) Stavenau, age 83, of Elysian passed away at her home on Sunday, August 20, 2023. 

Two runs in the bottom half of the 12th inning lifted the Morristown Morries amateur baseball team to a 9-8 win over Blue Earth in the 13-60 League finale for both teams Saturday, July 15.

The win moved the Morries into 3rd place in the 13-60 League American Division standings and help them avert a post-season play-in game Saturday, July 22.

Morristown will play Eagle Lake in the league quarterfinals. A win or a loss and the Morries will play Sunday either at Waterville or at home against Minnesota Lake or Lake Crystal. Game times are 2 p.m. at the high seed.

I know it has been a while since I have written, or duplicated, anything in this column space.

As we all know, it has been extremely busy the past month with city celebrations, which all had great turnouts!

With that being said, I have been presented the 12 commandments for seniors. Depending on who you ask, I am now a senior citizen at age 57. Others say it is 60 and yet others say it is 65. When I read these commandments, I realized I think I might qualify right now as a senior.

Local Legionnaires attended their respective Minnesota State Conventions last weekend.

The Elysian Legion Auxiliary Unit 311 attended the 103rd American Legion Auxiliary Department Convention at Jackpot Junction in Morton. The Elysian Legion attended the 104th American Legion Post/SAL/Riders Department of Minnesota Convention, also at Jackpot Junction.

Long-time educator Juanita Krueger of Morristown has been selected the 2022 Outstanding Elementary Teacher of the Year by a committee from the Minnesota South District of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod.

Evelyn Alma Delaske, age 101, of Waterville, died on March 8, 2022, at Carriage House Senior Living in Le Center.

Penny Terrell, age 70, passed away on February 13, 2022.
She was preceded in death by parents Ralph and Margaret and sisters Fay, Kay, and Joan. She was survived by siblings Ralph (Jodi), Margaret, Beth, Blair (Shannon), Pat (Sue), Judy (Bob), Tim (Robin), Chris, Jeanne (Tim) and Maureen; as well as many relatives and friends.

WEM freshmen Keegan Kuball and Carson Petry are the latest Grizzly wrestlers to advance to the Class A State Wrestling Tournament.
Kuball won the Section 2A heavyweight division Saturday in Blue Earth. Petry was the Section 2A runner-up at 113 pounds. Both will compete Friday, March 4 starting at approximately 10:30 a.m. at Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.
