Dorothy French

Dorothy French, 86, of Ortonville, MN, died unexpectedly in her sleep on Friday, August 16, 2019. She was the widow of Allen French.
Memorial services were conducted Saturday, August 24, at First United Methodist Church in Ortonville.  Rev. Melanie Reiners, Rev. Barb McKewin and Rev. Dr. Devern Schwenn officiated at the service.  Music was provided by Roger Goosen, organist; Sherry DeBoer, pianist; DeAndre French, trumpet, and Julie French, soloist. The active urn bearers were Gary, Bill Jr., Jon and Mark Ninneman.
Dorothy Ann was born March 27, 1933, to Ernest and Mamie (Dallman) VonEschen. She grew up in Ortonville and graduated from Ortonville High School in 1951.
Dorothy married Allen French on September 15, 1953, at the United Methodist Church. Dorothy and Allen adopted their daughter, Julie, on April 1, 1969.
Dorothy worked at National T and Red Owl grocery stores and for Pat Daly of P.D. Products. She was an integral partner in the family farming operations, milking cows, tending chickens and pigs, and cooking huge meals for the many hired men.
Dorothy took great pride in her gardens — raising vegetables to can and freeze and growing flowers, particularly hybrid irises.
Allen sold the farm in 1979 and they moved to Ortonville where Dorothy continued her gardening.
When Allen died in 2015, Dorothy moved in with her daughter and grandson, DeAndre. Dorothy spent time caring for her grandson and especially enjoyed his school programs and concerts.
Dorothy was active in her church, serving as a Sunday school teacher and superintendent to AWANA instructor, and helped in the church kitchen with meals for various events and services. She shared her beautiful soprano voice singing for weddings, funerals and church services.
A gracious hostess and wonderful cook, Dorothy often prepared feasts for family gatherings and hired farm workers.
Dorothy adored animals and enjoyed caring for the family dogs, Rowdy and Suzie. As her health declined, her gardening was reduced to

flower pots, which she cared for diligently.
Dorothy is survived by her daughter; grandson; sister, Joyce Ninneman of Milbank; sisters-in-law: Elsie French of Washington and Irene McHone of Arizona, and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
